Third Party Insurance (ACT) - Young girl with backpack

Third Party Insurance (TPI) is there to cover you for any personal injury you might cause to others if you’re unlucky enough to have a motor vehicle accident. In the ACT, this insurance is compulsory for all registered vehicles and is included in your vehicle registration payment.

Bear in mind that this insurance doesn’t cover accident damage to your vehicle. Your TPI only protects you from claims made against you, or the driver of your vehicle, if someone gets injured.

Who can make a claim?

If you have been injured in a motor vehicle accident and the driver of another vehicle was at fault, you may be able to claim compensation.  If a person dies as a result of a motor vehicle accident, close relatives may also be able to claim financial compensation.

You cannot make a TPI claim if you were the driver of the vehicle at fault. You can claim against the TPI of the vehicle at fault whether you were a driver, motorcyclist, passenger, pillion passenger, pedestrian or a cyclist.  If the vehicle that caused the accident was registered in the ACT, you can submit a Personal Injury Claim with NRMA Insurance.

For accidents prior to 1 October 2008:

  1. Ask your doctor to fill in a medical certificate (PDF)

For accidents after 1 October 2008:

  1. If your accident happened within the last 28 days, just submit a Motor Accident Notification form and a Motor Accident Medical Report to us and we can get started on your recovery.
  2. If it has been longer than 28 days since your accident but less than 9 months, please submit a Notice of Claim and Additional Information form to us as well as the Motor Accident Notification form and Motor Accident Medical Report.

Once you have completed the necessary forms post them to:
