Income Protection claims

Making a claim

We know that being off work because of sickness or injury can be stressful. You need to focus on getting better, not on paperwork. So we’ve made the claims process as easy as we can, with a personal claims consultant to support you step by step.
Step 1. Call 132 825 or download a Claim Form
Simply call us on 132 825 as soon as your doctor tells you you’re unable to work for longer than your waiting period, or when you’re made redundant (if you have Involuntary Unemployment Cover).
Step 2. Send us the details
Please send us:
  • A completed Claim Form
  • A certified copy* of proof of income, if required
  • Any other documents to support your claim
*A certified copy is a copy signed and stamped by a Justice of the Peace (JP) who has checked it against the original document.
Step 3. Resolution
We’ll be in touch as quickly as we can to let you know the outcome of your claim and explain what will happen next. We’ll calculate your pre-tax income based on your average pre-tax personal income in the previous 12 months.
Restrictions and waiting periods
If you have our Essentials Cover, your waiting period — the time you need to be off work or unable to perform your usual duties before you are able to claim — is fixed at 28 days.If you have our Income Protection Cover, you will have chosen a waiting period of 14, 28, 60 or 90 days.
There are some restrictions on what you can claim for. To find out more about what isn’t covered, see the Product Disclosure Statement.
Payout periods and payments
With NRMA Income Protection, you can choose the payout period you would like for sickness or injury claims.
  • Income Protection Cover gives you the choice of 6, 12 or 24 months — or even five years
  • Essentials Cover gives you the choice of 6, 12 or 24 months
If your claim is accepted, you could receive up to 85% of your pre-tax income paid monthly, up to $10,000 a month depending on your cover.
If you receive other income, such as workers’ compensation, unemployment benefits or social security while you’re claiming, we may adjust your payment. We’ll only do this if the combined amount of your Income Protection Cover payment and this other income is more than 85% of your usual pre-tax monthly income.

If your claim is approved, during the waiting period and while you are receiving claims payments, we won’t charge you any premiums.
Involuntary Unemployment Cover
If you have Involuntary Unemployment Cover, you could receive up to $3000 a month for up to three months if you are made redundant and your claim is accepted.
