Road safety

We have a long history of working with community groups to change behaviours and reduce the frequency and severity of incidents on the road.

Kidsafe

Each year more than 350 Australian children are killed and 60,000 hospitalised due to injuries that could have been avoided*.

Our partnership with Kidsafe (Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia) aims to support parents and carers to improve child safety.

Kidsafe is the leading Australian non-government, not-for-profit, charitable organisation dedicated to the prevention of unintentional injuries affecting children under 15 years of age.

We work with Kidsafe to support their road safety programs that promote the correct use of car restraints, improve home driveway and school car park safety, pedestrian safety and bicycle safety.

One of the major and preventable causes of child deaths and serious unintentional injury is a child not wearing an approved, appropriate and properly used car restraint. To help parents and carers, Kidsafe and NRMA Insurance offer free child restraint checks.

Last year, we worked with Kidsafe to correctly fit more than 15,000 child restraints in NSW, the ACT, QLD and WA.

To improve driveway safety, we also produce a Reversing Visibility Index (RVI) that measures how well a driver can see out the back of a car, promoted through brochures and media.

Crime prevention

We support organisations that increase security and safety through crime prevention. This includes programs that help change attitudes and practices of people towards protecting property and people.

Emergency readiness and response

We support The Salvation Army Emergency Services, the Queensland SES and Queensland Fire and Rescue Service who run community education programs that help people deal with emergency situations such as fire or storms.

The Salvation Army Emergency Services

We are the major sponsor of The Salvation Army Emergency Services (SAES) in ACT, NSW, Qld, SA and WA.

SAES volunteers cater for emergency workers and people affected by disasters such as bushfires, floods, storms or transport accidents. The SAES also links into The Salvation Army’s wider network of accommodation and support services to assist victims and their families.

Our support helps the SAES to maintain and continue their emergency services program by:

  • Providing much needed resources such as catering trucks and trailers, wet weather clothing and training items
  • Helping to promote the valuable services provided by the SAES
  • Offering additional funding and support during major disasters

For more information, visit the Salvos website or phone 13 SALVOS (13 72 58).

Queensland State Emergency Service

We are helping to storm-proof Queensland through our partnership with the State Emergency Service (SES).

The SES is a network of around 6,800 highly skilled volunteers who provide invaluable assistance in every Queensland community when emergencies occur.  From tarping roofs after a storm, to rescuing people stranded by floodwaters, searching for lost children, and saving bush walkers from a cliff in rugged terrain, SES volunteers are always there when needed.

Through our partnership we:

  • Help the Queensland SES remind people of the simple steps they can take to protect themselves and their property from storm damage
  • Provide grants to help SES groups purchase vital equipment to enhance storm response and recovery activities and implement community education programs
  • Recognise outstanding SES volunteers and units through Storm Heroes Awards for going above and the call of duty during storm season
  • Offer QLD SES volunteers a ‘Hero Discount’ on selected insurance policies

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service

We sponsor the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service’s (QFRS) highly regarded Safehome program.

Through Safehome, firefighters visit interested Queensland households to provide free advice about home fire safety issues.  These include smoke alarm installation and checking, evacuation planning, electrical safety and security issues.

With our support, the QFRS is able to provide an average of 125 Safehome visits per month.

For a free Safehome visit, call 1300 369 003 or visit the QFRS website.
