NRMA Insurance has announced $2 million in funding to support the Full Stop Foundation’s work to stop sexual, domestic and family violence, and to support those who may not feel safe in their homes as the COVID-19 crisis continues.
The $2 million donation will help the Full Stop Foundation answer up to 8,000 phone calls through its crisis counselling service as well as provide funds to up to 50 organisations that provide critical services across Australia.
The Full Stop Foundation, which raises funds to resource the work of Rape & Domestic Violence Services Australia, will use the NRMA Insurance funds to increase phone counselling services and support to clients as they move to safety and recovery.
According to the Full Stop Foundation, a major challenge during the COVID-19 lockdown has been ensuring people can safely and discretely access support, with phone calls to Rape & Domestic Violence Services Australia dropping by 31% in April 2020, while online assistance surged by 36%.
Full Stop Foundation Executive Officer Karen Willis said: “The NRMA Insurance donation comes at a critical time as we grapple to understand the impact of COVID-19 on people who have experienced domestic violence.
“While we know the number of women accessing sexual, domestic and family violence services has dropped during the COVID-19 lockdown, domestic violence homicide has increased. At the same time, access to services and support, and family and friends has been severely curtailed.
“Because of COVID-19 we fear that the psychological injury of sexual, domestic and family violence will have escalated considerably. As lockdown measures are reduced, we’re also concerned that violence may escalate as offenders seek to maintain control.
“So helping people safely and discretely access services and support is incredibly important right now,” Ms Willis said.
The funding is part of NRMA Insurance’s ongoing program of work supporting initiatives that help make our communities safer, more connected and resilient.
Announcing the funding, NRMA Insurance CEO Mark Milliner said addressing domestic and family violence is a vital part of making our communities safer.
“What the COVID-19 pandemic has done is reinforce the importance of having a safe home, and that means putting an end to violence of all kinds.
“We know more needs to be done to help ensure Australians feel safe in their homes, particularly women and children. That’s why we are proud to be helping the Full Stop Foundation expand its important work to help put a stop to sexual, domestic and family violence.
“In addition to supporting the expansion of phone counselling services, this funding will help build capacity across Australia by providing targeted support to local organisations that provide much needed help and support to those in need. We look forward to working closely with Full Stop Foundation in the months and years ahead,” Mr Milliner said.
Since the pandemic began, NRMA Insurance has introduced a number of measures to help our customers experiencing financial hardship to ensure they can continue to be protected by insurance. For further information visit www.nrma.com.au/coronavirus.
