Income Protection Insurance

Why have income protection?

Income protection gives you a regular monthly payment if you’re unable to work due to sickness or injury. So you can focus on getting better without worrying about your finances.

Do I need income protection?
We all rely on our incomes to pay the bills and care for our families. If you got sick or injured and couldn’t work, would you be able to support yourself and your family while you recover?

If the answer is no, you should consider income protection.

Think about it
If you have income protection through your super, check to see:
  • If you can choose how long you’d like to be paid for
  • How much cover it provides
  • How long you have to wait before you get paid
  • Whether your super is tied with your job or occupation — and if you leave, whether you will lose your insurance

You may find you’d prefer the flexibility of choosing your own income protection. That way, you can help make sure that your family is covered, no matter what the future brings.
Think about it

While many people think it won’t happen to them, the fact is, sickness and injury is more common than most of us realise. It’s been estimated that more than 60% of Australians will be disabled for more than one month during their working life*.   So it’s worth thinking about how you would manage if it happened to you and your family.

How to apply

Applying is easy — and if you change your mind, we'll give you a complete refund of all premiums paid if you cancel at any time in the first 30 days.

Who can apply?
At NRMA Insurance, we believe that every Australian deserves the peace of mind of income protection. That’s why we have a range of cover options and we can even offer cover to people who traditionally can’t get income protection.
We have cover available for:
  • Australian residents aged 18-60.
  • More occupations than many other insurers.
  • People who have been with their existing employer for less than six months.
  • Self-employed people who have been in business less than six months.
  • Homemakers can get a payout of up to $3,000 a month if sickness or injury prevents them performing their regular daily tasks.

Anyone can apply for NRMA Income Protection. Just answer some health and lifestyle questions to see if you qualify. If you’re not accepted (because of your health or occupation for example) don’t worry — you’ll still be offered our Essentials Cover. It has many of the benefits of Income Protection Cover, but there are also additional exclusions. See the Product Disclosure Statement for more information.

What do you need to do to apply?
To apply for income protection cover, you’ll need to answer some questions about your health, work and leisure activities and provide your contact details. Remember — when you apply, it’s important to be honest and give us all the information we ask for. Otherwise, we may be unable to pay your claim.
