Rideshare Insurance FAQs

Rideshare insurance is cover for vehicles used for services such as DiDi and Uber. We include it as part of our Comprehensive Car Insurance policy, however it will need to be included on your Certificate of Insurance (COI) after disclosing use of your vehicle for rideshare services.

With rideshare insurance, the vehicle you’re using to transport passengers is covered for:

  • damage caused to your own car
  • damage caused to other vehicles
  • property damage caused in an accident.

For more about what’s included, check out the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

Yes, we offer cover for Uber, Didi and other rideshare drivers with the following policies:

Keep in mind that our policies apply to occasional, not full-time ridesharing. You’ll need to let us know if you’re planning to start or stop using your vehicle for ridesharing, and usage must be shown on the Certificate of Insurance (COI) to be eligible for cover.

What about cover for food delivery (Uber Eats, DoorDash, Menulog)?

Yes, we can cover your vehicle for rideshare or takeaway food delivery services, but you’ll need to let us know beforehand for it to be included on your Certificate of Insurance (COI).

While delivering takeaway, you may be covered for up to 10 hours each week.

For information on cover for catering or full-time delivery services, explore our business insurance policies.

In addition to mandatory insurance types like a CTP Insurance policy, rideshare drivers have the option of considering a comprehensive car insurance policy with roadside assistance that includes a ridesharing extension or endorsement. This may also include cover for theft, vandalism and damage to third parties, plus cover for your own vehicle.

Without a clear ridesharing extension or endorsement in your policy, you may not receive cover for accidents or damage that occurs while using your own personal vehicle for ridesharing purposes.

If you’re driving for rideshare platforms like Uber or DiDi, you may be required to hold several  insurance policies, including:

  • Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance: Also known as a Green Slip in NSW or MAI insurance in the ACT, this policy is required for vehicle registration in some Australian states and territories. It covers personal injury to passengers or other people.

  • Third Party Property Damage Insurance: Some rideshare and delivery platforms may require drivers to hold a minimum level of car insurance. While requirements vary by platform, a Third-Party Property Damage policy is often the baseline to cover damage your vehicle may cause while working.

  • A rideshare insurance policy: Whether you’re using a comprehensive car insurance policy or third-party damage cover, your policy should include an extension or endorsement that allows you to drive for a rideshare platform. This must be included on your Certificate of Insurance.

To add rideshare coverage to an existing policy:

  1. log in to your account
  2. find your policy
  3. update the vehicle usage to include ridesharing.

Keep in mind, an additional premium may be required to extend your coverage, and the weekly hours you can work for a rideshare platform is limited to 10 hours.

Yes, other drivers listed on your policy can also drive for a rideshare platform and be covered. However, adding additional drivers may affect your premium, and you may need to pay an additional car insurance excess if something happens while someone else is driving your vehicle.

Keep in mind that the maximum time your car can be used for ridesharing is 10 hours per week. This is the combined total for all drivers who use your car.

For more information about what's covered, what's not, and when, read the relevant Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).

If you exceed the maximum 10 hours allowed for ridesharing, your claim may be denied if an accident occurs after you’ve exceeded the limit.

This means you may be personally liable for damage to your car or third-party property that occurs while driving for a rideshare platform.
