What is Renters’ Insurance?

Renters' Insurance (also known as Contents Insurance for Renters) is a type of Home Insurance for tenants.

Whether you’re renting alone or with flatmates, a partner or your family, you can cover the things that matter most in your home in case they’re ever stolen or damaged by a fire, flood, storm, water leak or other insured event2.

There are some things you just can’t live without, like your laptop when a big assignment is due, your fridge that keeps your food fresh, or your phone to call your loved ones. That’s why our policy lets you cover all of these and more, including furniture, rugs, TVs, cameras, washing machines and other appliances.

You can also customise your policy and add optional extras to suit your needs.

FAQs

Contents Insurance for Renters FAQs

What's the difference between Renters’ Insurance and Landlord Insurance?

If you’re renting, our Renters’ Insurance can help you protect the things you own and keep in your home, like your furniture, phone, TV, laptop and more.

We’ll also help cover the cost of accommodation if your home becomes unliveable after an insured event and you need somewhere else to stay1.

Landlord Insurance is for people who own rental properties who want to insure the structure of the building. It can also cover things belonging to the landlord that are kept inside the rental property, like furniture and furnishings left for tenants to use.

How does Contents Insurance work?

Basically, you tell us how much it would cost to replace all the items in your home at today's prices. Using that estimate, we’ll help cover the cost to replace those items if they’re damaged, stolen or destroyed as a result of an insured event.

To get an idea of how much your contents are worth, you can use our contents calculator as a guide.

Can I get cover with a housemate if I live in a share house?

Yes. You can either take out one policy to cover everyone's contents, or take out your own policy with just your contents.

You can only cover belongings owned by people listed on the policy, so if you get insurance as a group, make sure to add everyone's names to the policy.

What's the difference between General, Valuable and Portable contents?

General contents are items you keep in and around your home that aren't permanently attached or fixed to the home's structure, like furniture.

Valuable contents are covered as part of your general contents, however the cover is limited to $2,500 in total for all items in each of these categories:

  • Works of art
  • Collections
  • Jewellery and watches

Items in your home within these three categories can be insured for higher amounts, if you take out Valuable contents as an optional benefit.

Portable contents are items that you or your family own that you can take outside of your home. You're only covered for these if you take out Portable contents as an optional benefit.

A portable contents excess may apply, read the Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide.

Does Renters’ Insurance cover temporary accommodation?

Yes – if the home you’re currently renting and living in becomes unliveable due to damage caused by an insured event, we pay the difference between your usual rent and the cost of temporary accommodation1.

Why choose NRMA Renters' Contents Insurance?

Temporary accommodation cover

We can cover up to 12 months of temporary accommodation if your rental becomes unliveable after a covered incident1.

Things you should know

  1. If you’re renting the home, we pay the reasonable extra rent costs for temporary accommodation. As long as you were living in the damaged home permanently before the incident, we pay for accommodation for up to a year for the Contents Standard policy (or up to two years if you have a Contents Plus policy), or when your home is repaired or replaced (whichever is first). We pay your temporary accommodation costs up to 10% of your sum insured for Home Contents Standard policies, and up to 20% for Home Contents Plus. We need to be satisfied your home is unliveable and we need to agree to the cost before you make arrangements.

  2. We don’t cover actions of the sea, such as tides and waves. Check the PDS for a full list of exclusions. If we give you the option to remove cover for flood, rainwater run-off and storm surge and you choose to do so, you won’t be covered for loss or damage to your home caused by flood, rainwater run-off or storm surge.

  3. See the full details of the online discount. Any applicable discounts may be subject to minimum premiums. Discounts only apply until a minimum premium is reached. When we determine your premium on renewal, we may also limit any increases or decreases in your premium by considering factors such as your previous year's premium amount.

  4. We don’t cover damage caused by water leaking or escaping from a shower recess or shower base. We don’t cover loss from erosion or other earth movements. We don’t cover the costs to repair or replace the item that the liquid leaked or escaped from.

  5. We don't cover broken glass in televisions, radios, or computer equipment unless you choose to add Accidental Damage cover to your Home Contents Standard policy. Or, it's automatically included if you have Home Contents Plus.

  6. We don't cover loss or damage caused by tree cutting, lopping or felling, unless it was performed by a professional.

  7. We pay up to $500 for Contents Standard, and up to $2,000 for Contents Plus.

  8. If you have Contents Insurance and you are a tenant, cover applies both at the home and away from the home but within Australia.

  9. Cover applies at your current and new home for up to 14 days from when you start moving, as long as you give us details of your new home within this time.

  10. We don’t cover fishing equipment, sporting equipment, musical instruments or firearms while they’re in use.

  11. Portable items are covered for loss, theft and accidental damage. We cover up to $10,000 for each item unless you list it separately for more. There are other limits for items taken outside Australia or New Zealand, check the PDS. We don’t cover scratches and dents or items being cleaned or repaired. We don’t cover fishing equipment, sporting equipment, drones, musical instruments or firearms while they’re in use. We don’t cover bicycles while they’re being used in a competitive race or time trial. A portable contents excess may apply, read the Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide.
