Recovering from a natural disaster

If you’ve been impacted by a natural disaster, such as storms or bushfire, we’re here to help you recover.

We’re on the ground, here to help

Our Help Response Vehicles are at certain Bunnings car parks, ready to help you to make claims quickly. And you can access in-person support at certain disaster recovery centres or pop-up claims centres.

How can we help you, right now?

Have a policy with us? Call us or make a claim to start the recovery process. We may be able to help you find a place to stay, access emergency funds and arrange emergencies repairs.

Emergency repairs

We can send a repairer to help reduce risk of further damage and help make the property safe. Make sure you speak to us before authorising any repairs yourself.

A place to stay

If you can’t live at home because of what’s happened, temporary accommodation may be available to you. This could include support to stay with family and friends if you like.

Emergency funds

Is the situation is putting a strain on your finances? We may be able to fast-track your claim and see if you’re covered for emergency payments.

Struggling to cover payments including your excess? We may be able to deduct your excess from your claims settlement or extend your payment due dates.

Mental health support

Extreme weather can take a toll. Not just physically, but emotionally too. If you’ve been affected, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

The Lifeline Support Toolkit offers practical strategies and resources to support you through the mental health impacts of extreme weather.

Family and domestic violence support

If you’re experiencing family and domestic violence, there are people you can talk to and services that can help. Call 000 if you’re in immediate danger.

Call us on 132 132 to find out how we can keep you safe and protect your privacy in the process. We have a specialist team ready to support you.

Anything else?

Call us to let us know what you’re facing so we can support your specific situation.

Start your recovery

Make a claim to get things moving

You can make a claim, even if you don’t have all the details. That way, we can start the claims process and prioritise any emergency repairs.

Simply add more details to your claim through your online account or by quoting your claim number when you call.

Document the change, once it’s safe

Have you been told by emergency services that it’s safe to return to your property? If so, take photos and videos and make a list of what’s been damaged.

If you’re waiting for an assessment and it’s safe, you can clean up your property and dispose of damaged items that are unsafe or pose a health risk. If you’re disposing of items that you want to include in your claim – such as curtains or carpets – keep cut samples of them (if they don’t pose a health risk).

You can upload these details as part of your claim, or through claims tracker in the NRMA Insurance app if you gather these details after you’ve submitted it.
