Not sure whether you should buy a campervan or a motorhome?

Both campervans and motorhomes offer a home on the road, promising comfort, convenience and the freedom to explore. But if both are so similar, how do you decide? Here, we explain the main differences and things to consider.

    What is a campervan?

A campervan, also referred to as a camper, is a self-contained vehicle typically fitted with a bed, basic cooking facilities and storage. Some campervans even include a shower and toilet, ensuring you have everything you need while you’re seeking out adventure.

    What is a motorhome?

Like a campervan, a motorhome offers all the essentials you need on four wheels: a bed, a bathroom, a small kitchen and storage. Typically, motorhomes offer additional space and functionality than campervans, with some models boasting slide-out compartments and electric-drop down beds to boost liveability. It’s not uncommon to find a TV on board too.

What’s the main difference between a campervan and motorhome?

Besides size and layout, the main difference between a motorhome and campervan lies in the framework of the vehicle.

Essentially, a campervan is a repurposed van. The cab (where the driver sits) and the living area, are typically all in the same space.

Motorhomes are a little more complicated because they come in a variety of classes; but generally, they have a truck-cab chassis and a motorhome body. Depending on the class, the bed may be positioned over the cab (such as with a C Class) or positioned away from the cab (such as with a B Class).

The advantage of choosing a campervan or motorhome for travel

The beauty of both campervans and motorhomes is their compact size. They’re not too high and many will fit in the average suburban driveway or parking bay with relative ease. You also won’t have to worry about towing anything like you would with a caravan. Together, these factors help set you up for more freedom and flexibility to explore.

Things to consider when choosing between a campervan and motorhome

The floor plan: space and utility

Typically, a campervan is slightly more confined but has the benefit of being just as fitting for a trip to the supermarket as it is for a weekend away. Motorhomes on the other hand, are typically used exclusively for getaways, rather than everyday use, given the space they offer.

As you explore different brands and visit local dealers, you’ll quickly discover that both standard and luxury options are available for each of these recreational vehicles. Some will offer awnings, extra storage space, slide-out compartments and even solar panels, so ultimately, it depends on what comforts you value most, and how much space you need.

Your travel plans: duration and passenger numbers

As you may have guessed by the differences in configuration, campervans tend to be favoured by day-trippers and weekend wanderers, while motorhomes attract travellers who prefer a longer escape. Spending a long time in a confined space may or may not be your cup of tea, so it’s important to consider the average duration of the trips you intend to take to determine the best fit.

Another key consideration is how many people are going along for the ride. Campervans — being a little cosier — are a great fit for couples, while the functionality and space of a motorhome may be more convenient for a family of three or four.

Your budget: upfront costs and insurance

Finances may also influence your decision, so let’s explore a few factors:

Upfront price: while it depends on the brand and floorplan, the upfront cost of a campervan is usually less than a motorhome. A used campervan can go for as low as $90,000, while a brand-new one could set you back around $130,000. Comparatively, a used motorhome can fetch around $150,000, while a new one can range between $130,000 to $200,000.

Operating costs: buying the vehicle is just the tip of the iceberg; you’ll also need to consider things like registration costs, maintenance and servicing too. While the price of mechanical and home servicing can differ according to dealership and brand, some providers quote up to $1420 for a mechanical service (campervan or motorhome), and up to $444 for a 12-month house service (for a motorhome). So, it’s important to factor these figures into your budget.

Insurance: in addition to CTP Insurance, you may also be considering additional cover for your campervan or motorhome, to help cover damage to the vehicle itself, and the belongings you keep inside of it.

While you're best to check the Product Disclosure Statement for full details on what is and isn’t covered, in summary, a motorhome insurance policy from NRMA Insurance can help cover the cost to:

    • repair damage caused by a fire, storm or flood

    • repair or replace items permanently kept in your motorhome if they’re damaged or stolen

    • remove incorrect fuel, if you made a mistake filling up the tank (it happens!)

    • set you up for a night of accommodation if your motorhome is damaged and can’t be used (because of an insured event).

The price of insurance can vary, so to get an idea of cost, call for a quote.

    Still feeling undecided?

If you’re still on the fence about which recreational vehicle best suits you, why not try before you buy? Rental companies like Apollo, Britz, Cheapa, Mighty and Hippie all offer hire options to take a campervan or motorhome out on holiday, and it could be the experience that helps you decide. You may even be able to try it out for less if you’re a My NRMA Rewards member* in NSW.
