Cover Note for Car Insurance FAQs

Cover notes were documents historically used as proof that insurance was purchased by a driver, before a full insurance document could be issued.

Cover notes are mostly no longer available in Australia and have largely been replaced with Car Insurance that activates as soon as the policy has been purchased online or on the phone.

Cover notes for Car Insurance are mostly no longer available because they have been replaced by instant, digital insurance policies and mandatory cooling-off periods.

Instead of issuing a free-of-charge cover note while paperwork is being processed, policies can be issued and activated on the spot, giving you immediate coverage upon purchase.

Our insurance comes with a 21-day cooling-off period, in case you change your mind.

Cover notes for Car Insurance have been replaced by instant policy activation and cooling-off periods:

  • Instant policy activation: When you choose Car Insurance with us, your policy can be activated straight away. You’ll get your 'certificate of insurance’, either online or over the phone. This gives you proof of purchase in addition to your coverage.

  • Cooling-off period: After you’ve purchased a policy, it’s a legal requirement to give you a 14-21 day cooling-off period. During this time, you can choose to cancel your insurance and if you haven’t made a claim, you’ll receive a full refund. This allows you to review your policy further and offers similar flexibility to a cover note.

No, a cooling-off period is not the same as a cover note. Cover notes acted as temporary insurance cover, often at no-cost, however they are largely unavailable in Australia today.

A cooling-off period allows you to cancel your insurance within the cooling-off period and receive a full refund. It’s a legal requirement to have a cooling-off period and it’s automatically included when you take out our Car Insurance.

Our 21-day cooling-off period is a legal requirement and automatically included when you purchase or renew a Car Insurance policy.

You can cancel your policy within the 21-day cooling-off period and if you haven’t made a claim on your policy, we’ll refund the premium paid to us in full.

Simply go to your online account and process the cancellation.
