Can I get a hire car after an incident?

If an incident is your fault:

  • Comprehensive Plus: Automatically included
  • Comprehensive: Available as an option
  • Comprehensive Basics: Not available
  • Third Party Fire and Theft: Not available
  • Third Party Property Damage: Not available

If the incident is not your fault:

  • Comprehensive Plus: Automatically included
  • Comprehensive: Automatically included

For Classic Car policies

Hire car after an incident is available as an option for new and renewing Classic Car policies. If this option is chosen, a hire car is available after any incident we cover, whether or not the incident is your fault.

If you have Comprehensive cover (including Comprehensive Plus and Comprehensive Basics), and the incident you're claiming for is covered under your policy, you can claim taxi fares or rideshare service fees for getting home from an accident, or getting to and from your repairer or hire car provider.

Depending on your level of cover, you can claim these costs of:

  • Up to $250 if you have Comprehensive Plus
  • Up to $150 if you have Comprehensive
  • Up to $75 if you have Comprehensive Basics.

If you are more than 100kms from home and your car can’t be driven after an incident we cover, we’ll cover the costs of emergency transport and accommodation:

  • Up to $1,500 if you have Comprehensive Plus
  • Up to $1,000 if you have Comprehensive
  • Up to $750 if you have Comprehensive Basics or Third Party Fire & Theft.

Important note for customers in NSW, Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT:

If your policy was

  • First purchased before 21 April 2024 and not yet renewed
  • Last renewed before 1 July 2024

your cover will be different. Call us on 132 132.

First check to make sure everyone's OK and ring 000 in case of injury or hazard.

If your car can't be driven (after an incident we cover) and your policy covers towing, call us 24/7 on 132 132 and we'll arrange a tow for you.

If another car is involved, it's important to try and get the other driver's details. If you can, ask for their:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Licence number
  • Car's registration number

It's also helpful to take photos of the damage to both cars.

If you’re eligible for a hire vehicle after a covered incident and take up this option, we’ll arrange the hire vehicle through one of our preferred suppliers. This may not be an EV, hybrid or PHEV vehicle.

The main thing you get with Third Party Property Damage Insurance is ‘liability cover’.

It’s a basic level of cover (all our car insurance policies come with liability cover up to $20 million).

It covers you for damage you cause to other people’s cars or property in an accident.
