Choosing a car insurance policy for your EV

The insurance options we have available for traditional combustion engine vehicles are equally available for EVs and hybrid vehicles (with the exception of Classic Car Insurance). This means you have the same levels of cover available to choose from as your petrol-filling counterparts.

To work out what level of cover is right for you and your EV, take time to compare all the different inclusions, exclusions and limits to see what option suits your circumstances best, and remember to always read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for full details.

FAQs

EV Car Insurance FAQs

What is the cost of insuring an electric car?

Car insurance premiums vary because we all have different circumstances and needs. For some of the factors we consider, take a look at the Premium, Excess and Discounts Guide.

Will my EV charger be covered?

If you have a Comprehensive Car Insurance policy with us, your portable charge cord will be covered as an accessory to your vehicle. However, the charging unit wired and affixed to the wall of your home would not be covered by your car insurance policy.

Does NRMA Car Insurance cover damage from electrical fires?

If you choose one of our car insurance products that includes cover for fire — such as a Comprehensive or Third Party Fire and Theft policy —damage to your vehicle as a result of an electrical fire would be covered.

Does NRMA Insurance offer separate policies for electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid cars?

No, we don’t have separate policies for different types of electric or hybrid vehicles.  Our Car Insurance options are equally available to all engine types, combustion, hybrid, or fully electric.
