Separation, divorce and your insurance

Are you experiencing relationship breakdown, separation or divorce? Here are ways to think about keeping your insurance up to date.

We’re here to talk through these changes

If you’re dealing with separation or divorce, it matters to make sure your insurance policies are up to date.

Updating your key details can help you be confident you won’t be left uninsured or even denied in the event you need to make a claim.

What is a joint or shared insurance policy?

If you’re a joint policyholder, you and the other person listed on the policy share the coverage, rights and responsibilities of that policy.  It also means you can both:

  • Make a claim
  • Change your address
  • Make policy changes
  • Receive communications.

Keep this in mind as you think about how and when you update your policies to reflect changes to your relationship status.

Be aware that separating does not invalidate a shared insurance policy, so long as you both have financial interest in the insured asset and keep the policy.

Are you affected by family and domestic violence?

Your privacy and safety are our top priority. We can help make sure your personal information is kept safe and private.

We can confidentially set up a new policy with a safe address and refer you to extra help and support if that’s appropriate.

Call us during business hours on 132 132 and ask to speak to the Customer Help Team.

Updating your policy to reflect changes

Make sure you’ve updated your insurance details, so you’re not left uninsured or denied if you make a claim. You may like to think about:

  • Taking out a new policy
  • Updating your address
  • Updating payment details
  • Making sure the right people are listed
  • Making sure you’re covered for what you need.

Updating your car insurance

If you’re both listed on your car insurance policy, you may need to make some changes. Think about who owns and uses the car and update your insurance details if necessary.

Have a comprehensive car insurance policy?

We rely on accurate details about the primary driver, so make sure you’ve updated driver details.

Remember to let us know who owns and drives the car. You can look into transferring a car into another name by visiting your state or territory’s government road service website.

Updating your home and contents insurance

Have either of you moved out? You may need to update your address, so your policy is accurate and you get sent all policy documents and correspondence.

Make sure your belongings are insured, be that through your existing policy or by taking out a new one. Cover is essential if you need to make a claim.
