What is Cruise Cover?

Cruising away from here? Don’t forget to add Cruise Cover to your travel insurance policy. It covers you for things like getting sick or injured on a vessel, cabin confinement or missing the port after an excursion.

While regular Travel Insurance is valuable for any holiday, it won’t cover you for some unique situations that can arise on board. You can add Cruise Cover to any of our International Travel Insurance policies. If you are going on a multi-night ocean or sea cruise around Australia, simply choose ‘Australia – Domestic Cruise’ as your destination so you can add Cruise Cover to your International Comprehensive or Essentials plan.

You can rest easy, knowing cover is available for a ship-to-shore evacuation, severe sea sickness or if you miss a pre-paid shore excursion.

For full details, including limits, conditions and exclusions, always read the PDS and TMD before you buy.

What does Cruise Travel Insurance cover?

Included

Available with our International Comprehensive and Essentials travel insurance plans, add cruise cover to your policy and get cover for the following benefits (cover varies depending on the plan you choose)

  • $Unlimited2 on-board medical and dental treatment if you get sick or injured at sea.

  • Ship-to-shore medical evacuation if you need urgent care on land.

  • $Unlimited2 treatment costs for seasickness while on your cruise.

  • Daily allowance if you’re confined to your cabin due to illness (up to $100 per day or $1500 total).

  • Reimbursement up to $1000 if your cruise misses a scheduled port.

  • Cover up to $1000 for missed, pre-paid shore excursions if your itinerary changes.

Cover will not exceed 12 months from the onset of the illness or injury. Limits, sub-limits, conditions and exclusions apply.

Not included

There are some things we don’t cover

  • Claims involving cruise travel including incidents on board or cancelling the cruise if cruise cover hasn’t been added to your policy.

  • Travelling on private sailing vessel or a privately registered vessel in international waters.

  • Pre-existing medical conditions (unless automatically included or approved, added and paid for).

Always refer to the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to understand what’s covered and what’s not.

Options to vary your cover

Add these when you get a quote

  • Increase your luggage item cover if you’re taking valuable items on board.

  • Add cover for certain adventure activities, like motorcycling or snow sports.

  • Lower your excess by choosing an excess reduction option.

  • Select annual multi-trip cover if you plan to cruise or travel more than once a year.

  • Choose your cancellation cover limit.

Annual multi-trip

Take as many trips in a year as you want to your chosen destination or area, all on the one policy. All our annual multi-trip plans are provided under our Comprehensive Travel Insurance plan, giving you our highest-level travel insurance.

You can select cover for up to 30, 45 or 60 days per trip for international policies (15 or 30 for domestic). That way, you can travel as often as you like throughout the year (up to your chosen limit).

To be covered by an annual multi-trip plan, your destination must be over 250km from your home. Or, if your destination is less than 250km from your home, your trip must include at least one night of paid accommodation (like in a hotel or Airbnb).

Choose the cover that’s right for you

If your holiday includes a multi-night sea or ocean cruise, enter your destination/area of travel and to get cruise cover, make sure you add Cruise Cover when you get a quote:

  • For a domestic cruise, choose ‘Australia - Domestic Cruise’ as your main destination in the quote entry form and then add Cruise Cover
  • For an international cruise, simply select your main destination and add Cruise Cover to your chosen international plan.

An additional premium applies.

Reminder: you don’t need to add Cruise Cover for river cruises. Always read the PDS to understand our cover limits, exclusions, and conditions.

Benefits of Cruise Cover

We designed cruise cover for the things that can go wrong at sea (because we all know sometimes things don’t go to plan). Here’s how it can help.

On-board medical and dental treatment

If you need medical or dental care while at sea, Cruise Cover provides $Unlimited2 cover for those costs. That way, you can get treated on board without facing big bills later.

Ship-to-shore evacuation

If specialist treatment is needed on land, Cruise Cover includes as a benefit $Unlimited2 coverage for your evacuation from the ship. It means you can be transferred quickly and with less worry if the unexpected happens.

Seasickness treatment

Seasickness can ruin a holiday. If it’s severe enough to need treatment, Cruise Cover helps with those costs too – again, covered under your $Unlimited2 medical benefits.

Cabin confinement allowance

If you’re confined to your cabin due to illness, Cruise Cover provides $100 per day, up to $1,500 in total, to cover some of the disruption.

Missed shore excursions

If you miss a pre-paid shore excursion due to an unforeseeable circumstance outside your control, you can claim up to $1,000 for the non-refundable cost of the unused, prepaid ticket.

Missed port (Embarkation)

If due to an unforeseeable circumstance outside your control you miss getting to your prebooked embarkation port or you miss your prebooked connection to get to your prebooked embarkation port, you can claim up to $1,000 to use alternative public transport services to catch up on your planned itinerary.

FAQs

Cruise Cover FAQs

It depends on the cruise you plan to do. If your cruise stays in Australian waters or rivers, you can purchase a domestic policy without the need for cruise cover. You can select ‘Australia’. If your cruise is a multi-night cruise on the ocean or sea (e.g. a port-to-port cruise from Sydney to Brisbane) you’ll need to enter your destination as ‘Australia – Domestic Cruise’ and add Cruise Cover. An International plan is then available as it includes a benefit for Overseas Medical Expenses.

If you don’t tell us you’re cruising and pay the extra premium, claims that relate to your multi‑night cruise or that happen on the cruise are not covered.

Yes. Treatment for seasickness is covered under your $Unlimited2 on-board medical benefit. If you’re confined to your cabin due to illness, you can also claim $100 per day (up to $1,500 in total) to help offset the disruption.

Yes. Cruise Cover can reimburse up to $1,000 for alternative transport expenses if you cannot arrive at your embarkation port in time for your scheduled departure. It also can cover up to $1,000 if you miss a pre-paid shore excursion due to an unforeseeable circumstance outside your control. Keep any receipts or excursion confirmations to support your claim.

Limit, sub-limits, conditions and exclusions apply.

River cruises and ferry trips are already covered under our Domestic and International travel insurance plans, so no extra Cruise Cover is needed. But if you are planning an ocean or sea going cruise of two nights or more, then our Cruise Cover is applicable.

You may be able to cover pre‑existing medical conditions on your cruise holiday.

Pre‑existing condition cover is only available if your conditions:

  • are all automatically included conditions in your PDS (and you meet all criteria), or
  • we approve them after you complete a health assessment and you pay any additional premium.

You must tell us about all your pre‑existing conditions up-front, otherwise related claims won’t be covered.

Cruise Cover is required for cruise holidays and an additional premium applies.

Please check the PDS for full details.

The following restrictions apply to claims arising in any way from the pregnancy of any person.

Cover is only provided for serious, unexpected pregnancy complications up to 23 weeks, 6 days. If you are pregnant depending on your pregnancy you may need to apply for cover when you purchase the policy and pay any required additional premium (refer to the PDS for details). Please note childbirth and costs relating to the health or care of a newborn aren’t covered.

If you’re pregnant, it’s best to confirm your stage of pregnancy before you buy cover. Consider your travel insurance needs when travelling after 20 weeks gestation as costs for childbirth and neonatal care overseas can be expensive.

Cruise Cover is required for cruise holidays and an additional premium applies.

Yes, you can. But if you have already departed on your journey, your cover is subject to a three day no cover period. Meaning no cover will apply to any claims that have already arisen or that arise within the first three days of your policy. Once the three days have passed, your cover will begin.

You can still call us if you need our help during those three days, but you just won’t have financial cover for any incidents that occur.

If you miss the ship because of a covered event (like a delayed connecting flight), your policy may help with additional transport costs to re-join the cruise. This only applies if you have cruise cover and the event is covered under the PDS, so always check your policy before you travel.
