Car insurance in SA explained

In South Australia, there are mandatory and optional types of insurance for your vehicle.

CTP is a mandatory requirement for registering a vehicle in SA. It’s designed to help cover injuries you might cause to other people in an accident. Importantly, CTP doesn’t pay for damage to your own car, damage to someone else’s vehicle, or any property repairs. It’s intended for people, rather than vehicles.

Insurance other than CTP Insurance is optional, and you can choose the level of protection you want for yourself and your vehicle.

Drivers in SA looking for car insurance with all the bells and whistles could consider one of the levels of Comprehensive Car Insurance.

This type of insurance covers damage to your car, and accidental damage to other cars or property. Comprehensive Car Insurance also cover fire, theft and storm damage.

Third Party and Third Party Fire and Theft Car Insurance

Third Party Property Damage Insurance and Third Party Fire & Theft Insurance is an option if you’re only looking to cover accidental damage you might cause to other vehicles or property, or want to help protect your own car against fire or theft.

As an SA driver, choosing your cover might be based on local conditions, such as whether you’re likely to experience wildlife collisions, severe hailstorms or bushfire risks, especially in outer‑metro and rural regions.

CTP Insurance and Comprehensive Car Insurance are different.

You need CTP Insurance to register your vehicle in South Australia, and it covers related medical costs and lost income if people are injured in an accident you cause on the road.

Comprehensive Car Insurance is optional and covers certain things that your CTP Insurance doesn’t. It covers your car for accidental damage, collision or crash, severe weather, theft, vandalism and malicious acts. Our Comprehensive Car Insurance also covers the extras on your car like alloy wheels, sunroofs and custom baby seats.
