Green Slip Insurance FAQs

The length of a Green Slip (also known as Compulsory Third Party Insurance) is tied to your vehicle registration period. Drivers in NSW can choose either a 6 month or 12 month Green Slip to match their registration term.

For example, for a 12 month registration you may consider purchasing a 12 month Green Slip. You can renew your Green Slip each time your registration comes up for renewal.

You can purchase a Green Slip up to 42 days before your registration is due, but it will only come into effect when the registration period begins.

If you’re registering a vehicle for the first time or if the registration has expired for more than 21 days, you may only be able to choose a 12 month Green Slip.

A Green Slip is generally purchased to align with your registration period.

A 3 month Green Slip is only available in specific circumstances.

If you have a heavy vehicle with a gross mass of more than 4.5 tonnes, or if you’re a motor dealer registering a vehicle for the first time, a 3-month Green Slip may be available.

Otherwise, for most light vehicles, the available options with NRMA Insurance are 6 months or 12 months.

If your registration has expired for more than 21 days, you may only be able to choose a 12 month Green Slip when renewing.
