Comparing car insurance?

Here’s some things to consider when choosing a policy.

While price is important, it’s not the only thing to consider when you’re choosing a policy. Here’s a few other ideas to keep in mind:

  • Car age and value: Do you have a new car you recently purchased, or an older vehicle with a lot of mileage? Sometimes it’s worth considering how much your car is worth against what you might be paying for insurance. You may want to check whether a policy has an agreed or market value arrangement when making a decision on your policy.

  • Other drivers: Will there be more than one person driving the car? Sometimes, a different excess will apply depending on who’s behind the wheel at the time of an accident. For example, an age excess can be added to a policy if a young driver (under 25) is going to be driving the car.

  • Location: Different road risks can apply to different areas, and this may impact your decision on what level of cover you want to choose.

  • Crime statistics: Did you know that in 2023-24, around 72,000 Australian households had a motor vehicle stolen? Depending on where you’re located, this may be a risk worth considering when choosing a policy. For example, Third Party Property Damage won’t cover a stolen vehicle claim, so if this is important to you, you may want to consider a Comprehensive policy or Third Party Fire and Theft instead.

  • Your budget in the event of a claim: Accidents happen and unexpected costs can be stressful. Assess the cost of insurance against how much you think you could afford to pay in the event of a collision.
