Car Insurance for P-platers (provisional drivers)

P plates on and ready to go? Whether you’re sporting red or green Ps, our car insurance options are suitable for all drivers, including provisional licence holders. While we don’t offer a specific policy exclusively for P-platers, there’s plenty of choice.

Are P-platers covered under my car insurance policy?

Yes. P-platers can be covered under car insurance, even if they’re unlisted, if they’re authorised to drive the car.

P-platers are newer drivers, so they may attract a higher excess, depending on their age, due to the additional risk younger drivers can face on the road.

You don’t have to list every driver on your policy but adding them can help you avoid paying extra excesses that may apply if an unlisted driver makes a claim.

What car insurance options are available for P-platers?

While we don’t offer a specific policy, P-platers can choose from the same types of car insurance available to any driver, but the right option depends on the level of cover they want.

  • Comprehensive insurance offers broad protection covering damage to their own car as well as other vehicles or property.

  • Third Party Property Damage provides cover for damage caused to someone else’s car or property if they’re responsible for the accident.

  • Third Party Fire and Theft offers cover if your car’s damaged by fire or stolen, while still providing protection for damage you cause to someone else’s car or property.

  • Depending on where they live, CTP/Green Slip is a compulsory insurance that covers injuries to people in an accident.
