What is motor burnout cover, offered under NRMA Home Insurance?

Motor burnout cover, which may be included under your home insurance policy, covers damage or loss caused by electric motor burnout in appliances when the electric motor stops working due to a power surge or change in electrical current.

It can help reduce unexpected repair or replacement costs for essential appliances like fridges, air conditioners and pool pumps if their motors suddenly fail.

How do I add motor burnout to my home insurance cover?

Motor burnout cover may already be included in your NRMA Home Insurance policy, depending on the level of cover you choose.

It’s available as optional cover under NRMA Home Building, Home Contents and combined Home Building & Contents policies. In some products, such as Home Building Plus and Home Contents Plus, motor burnout is automatically included, so you won’t need to add it on. For all other policy types, it may be available as an optional benefit.

Is cover for motor burnout worth it?

It depends on your situation. You may want to think about things like:

  • the cost of your policy (premium)
  • what the cover includes
  • any excess that may apply
  • the age and condition of the motor.

  2. Document the damage. Take photos of the affected appliance and any related damage. Next, gather receipts or other proof of ownership where available. This information helps us with your claim.

  3. Start your claim. You can start the process online or over the phone. To get started, we’ll ask for some personal information so we can locate your policy, and then you’ll be able to tell us what happened.

  4. Track your claim. You can check the progress of your claim and upload additional information as needed until your claim is finalised.

Things you should know

  1. We don’t cover actions of the sea, such as tides and waves. Check the PDS for a full list of exclusions. For insured properties in NSW, ACT or Tasmania, if we give you the option to remove cover for flood, rainwater run-off and storm surge from your Contents Insurance and you choose to do so, you won’t be covered for loss or damage to your contents caused by flood, rainwater run-off or storm surge.

  2. If you’re renting the home, we pay the reasonable extra rent costs for temporary accommodation. If you own and live in your home, we cover the reasonable costs of temporary accommodation. As long as you were living in the damaged home permanently before the incident, we pay for accommodation for up to a year for the Home Contents Standard policy (or up to two years if you have a Home Contents Plus policy), or when your home is repaired or replaced (whichever is first). We pay your extra temporary accommodation costs up to 10% of your sum insured for Home Contents Standard policies, and up to 20% for Home Contents Plus. We need to be satisfied your home is unliveable and we need to agree to the cost before you make arrangements.

  3. We don’t cover damage caused by water leaking or escaping from a shower recess or shower base. We don’t cover loss from erosion or other earth movements. We don’t cover the costs to repair or replace the item that the liquid leaked or escaped from.

  4. We don't cover broken glass in televisions, radios, or computer equipment unless you choose to add Accidental damage cover to your Home Contents Standard policy. Or, it’s automatically included if you have Home Contents Plus.

  5. We don't cover loss or damage caused by tree cutting, lopping or felling, unless it was performed by a professional.

  6. We pay up to $500 for Contents Standard, and up to $2,000 for Contents Plus.

  7. For owners, cover applies if the incident happens away from your home but still in Australia. Fro tenants or if your home is under a strata title, cover also applies if the incident happens at the home or site and for which you or your family are responsible for.
