What is Public Liability Insurance?

Public Liability Insurance can help cover claims if your business activities cause injury to a person or damage to someone else's property.

For example, if the floor in your shop is wet, and a customer slips and hurts themselves, or you’re cleaning a client’s house and someone trips over equipment you've left out.

Without Public Liability Insurance, legal bills and compensation for these claims could disrupt your cash flow and your business.

So, whether you run an e-commerce website from your house, work on-site at your clients’ homes, or have a team and an office, Public Liability Insurance can help protect you from these unexpected costs.

When you buy NRMA Small Business Insurance online, Public Liability Insurance is included alongside the additional covers you choose.

What is Small Business Insurance?

Small business insurance options for your small business

Because every small business is different, choose from a range of available cover options to build a policy that suits the way yours operates.

Remember to always read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for all the ins and outs.

Public Liability Insurance

Helps cover your business for compensation claims and costs if your business is found liable for causing injury or property damage to a third party.2

Commercial Motor Vehicle Insurance

This cover can help with compensation claims if your business vehicle, such as a van, ute or light truck, accidentally causes damage to someone else’s property in an accident. Depending on the cover you choose, it can also help protect your vehicle against accidents, theft and damage.2

Property

Property cover may help protect the buildings you own and the contents and stock you use to run your business, including equipment, furniture and stock, if they're damaged by a covered event. For example, if a storm damages your bakery and destroys ingredients stored on-site, this cover may help with a covered claim.2

Portable Property

If you take tools, equipment or other business items away from your business premises, portable property cover may help protect them while they’re on the move or at a temporary work location. This cover may suit tradies, mobile operators and other businesses that rely on equipment off-site. For example, if someone breaks into your locked work vehicle and steals your tools while you’re working at a customer’s property, portable property cover may help with a covered claim.2

Business Interruption

If your business can’t trade after an insured event like a fire or storm, this cover can help with lost income and ongoing costs like rent or wages, while you get back on your feet.3

Personal Accident and Illness

If an accident or illness covered by the policy stops you from doing your regular work, this cover can provide a weekly benefit, or a lump sum for certain permanent injuries, like sight or hearing loss.2

Theft

Worried about security and unwanted visitors? Help protect your business against lost or damaged stock or insured business contents from break-ins.2

Glass

Covers breakage to things like your shopfront windows, glass shelving and display cabinets.2

Money

Protect your business’s money, if it’s lost, damaged or stolen, whether it’s in transit, in a safe on your premises, or kept at home.2

Tax Investigation

Can help cover the cost of professional fees if your business is audited by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) so you can get support preparing and responding to the ATO.2

Computer and Electronic Equipment

Helps cover your office’s tech and gadgets against sudden, unforeseen damage from specified events like fire, storms, floods and theft.2

Machinery

Helps protect specified business machinery if it suddenly breaks down due to an unexpected electrical or mechanical fault.2

Employee Dishonesty

Helps protect your business against direct loss of money or goods caused by employee fraud, embezzlement or dishonesty.2

FAQs

Small business insurance FAQs

Whether you need small business insurance depends on your trade, the risks involved and any legal or contractual requirements. Business Insurance can help protect your business from unexpected costs, such as customer injury, property damage, theft or damage to equipment. Many small businesses start with Public Liability Insurance and then add cover options that suit the way they work.

Public Liability Insurance can help cover claims if your business activities cause injury to a person or damage to someone else's property.

Product Liability Insurance can help cover claims if a product you have sold, supplied or manufactured causes injury or property damage after it has left your control.

Public Liability relates to the services and activities of your business, while Product Liability relates to the products your business provides.

When you buy NRMA Business Insurance online, Public Liability Insurance is included alongside the additional covers you choose.

Yes, home-based and online businesses can apply for NRMA Business Insurance.

Keep in mind that standard Home Insurance may cover basic home office items, such as a desk or chair, but doesn’t cover business stock kept at home or business-related liability, such as if a client or supplier is injured at your home. That’s where Business Insurance can help, with cover options for some of the risks that come with running a business from home.

Please note that Business Insurance doesn't include cyber cover, so if you run an online business, you may need separate cyber insurance.

We offer cover for eligible small businesses, sole traders and home-based businesses across most of Australia. You can tailor your small business insurance to suit your trade and business needs. Many businesses start with Public Liability Insurance and adding other cover options where available.

Eligibility, cover and availability may vary depending on your business type and location.

Things you should know

  1. You can save up to 10% on the ‘base premium’ for the first year when you purchase an eligible new NRMA Business Insurance policy online. The base premium is the premium we have calculated but does not include any government or statutory charges. Any discounts only apply until you reach a minimum premium, so your discount might be limited by the minimum premium (in which case the discount applied may be significantly below the maximum advertised discount). If your base premium is $220 (the minimum base premium for NRMA Business Insurance) you will not receive a discount under this Business Insurance Online Offer. This offer is available on eligible products only, excludes Professional Indemnity Insurance, Information and Communications Technology Liability Insurance. The offer may be withdrawn at any time and is subject to its full terms and conditions. When we calculate your premium on renewal, we may limit any increases or decreases in your renewal premium by considering factors like your previous year’s premium. Cover is subject to standard underwriting and policy terms.

  2. Terms, conditions, limits and exclusions apply. See the relevant Product Disclosure Statement for further details. When you buy online, Public Liability Insurance is automatically included in your policy. If you do not require this cover, please contact your local business insurance specialist.

  3. Business interruption cover does not cover physical assets. Cover is subject to eligibility requirements and the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of your policy. See the relevant Product Disclosure Statement for further details.
