Prepare for Heatwaves

Simple steps you can take to get prepared

A few simple steps can help you prepare for the heat. Get started with the short video and 5 helpful tips on this page.

5 things you can do to help prepare for a heatwave

1

Check fans and air-conditioners are working well and get them serviced

Being able to cool your home during a heatwave is crucial. Make sure everything is working before you enter the summer months.

2

Choose curtains that can reflect heat

Use curtains with pale linings in rooms that get a lot of sunlight to help reflect the heat.

3

Think about adding shutters or shading to windows that face west

The sun sets in the west which is why rooms that face this way often become the hottest. Consider putting shading, such as external blinds or shutters, on windows in rooms that face in this direction.

4

Prepare a cool room in your house

Use air conditioning, fans, curtains and blinds to create a cool room in your home for when a heatwave is at its most intense.

5

Make sure your house can properly manage its temperature without compromising security

Insulation in the ceiling and walls is a great way to do this and will help keep your house cool.
