Storm & Hail

Store and secure loose items, and clear debris

Strong winds can turn outdoor furniture and organic debris into dangerous projectiles.

What to store, remove and secure – and how

If a storm’s approaching, many outdoor items like light furniture and children’s toys could simply be brought inside. Any organic debris like loose or fallen branches should be cleared and discarded. And larger items such as trampolines, garden umbrellas or barbecues that you can’t bring inside should be tied down.

Safety steps

Here's what you can do

Where possible, bring inside any items that could be dangerous if picked up by the wind – like outdoor furniture, toys, pot plants and rubbish bins – and store them in your home, shed or garage.

Remove loose branches and any garden debris that could become projectiles.

Secure large items like trampolines, outdoor umbrellas and barbecues with tools and equipment strong enough to withstand severe weather.

Use tie-down straps and rope to loop around heavy objects and then anchor them to something sturdy like a fence or strong ground stakes.

Protect outdoor furniture with waterproof covers if you can't move it inside. Cover garden beds with netting or mesh to help prevent soil erosion.
