Car Insurance for learner drivers

Starting your driving journey? Our car insurance options are suitable for all drivers, including learner drivers.

Do learner drivers need their own car insurance policy?

Learner drivers generally don’t need a separate policy, as we can cover learners under an existing Comprehensive Car Insurance or Third Party Car Insurance policy.

To decide what option is best for you, considering who owns the car may help, for example:

  1. If you’re learning to drive in a car you own, you might consider taking out your own individual policy.

  2. If you’re learning in someone else’s vehicle, you might be covered by the car owner’s insurance policy. Keep in mind, if there’s an incident, any excess payable is based on the supervising licensed driver in the passenger seat.

Learner driver car insurance FAQs

Yes, with NRMA Insurance you can take out your own car insurance policy as a learner driver if you own the car you’re learning in.

If you’re driving someone else’s car, you may already be covered under their existing policy, depending on their insurer and level of cover.

The type of car insurance cover you choose will depend on your own personal needs, budget and circumstances.

Some people opt for Comprehensive cover, which covers accidental damage your car causes to other vehicles and property, as well as damage to your car. This provides the broadest level of protection if something goes wrong.

There's also Third Party Property Damage, which covers accidental damage your car causes to other vehicles, and Third Party Fire and Theft.

Depending on where your car is registered, your vehicle may require Compulsory Third-Party Insurance (known as Green Slip in NSW) for registration. CTP helps provide cover for injuries to other people if you cause a road accident.

If you’re learning to drive in a vehicle that already has CTP cover, no additional cover is needed. At renewal, the age of the youngest driver will need to be declared, which may apply to a learner driver.

If you’ve bought your own vehicle and it needs to be registered, then you will need to arrange Green Slip cover (if you’re in NSW). This cover is separate to an NRMA Comprehensive Car or Third Party Car Insurance policies.

The claims process remains the same, you’ll just need to make sure you let us know who was driving the car at the time of the accident.

If a learner driver is involved in an incident while driving a family member’s car, the excess will be based on the age of the fully licenced accompanying driver.

If a learner driver is driving their own vehicle, the excess will be based on the learner's age.
