I'm an NRMA driver and I've caused an accident injuring someone else, what do I do?

You don't need to lodge a claim yourself. The injured person or a close relative needs to complete the Accident notification form or Personal injury form and submit it to us. For more information on our claims form, visit our CTP injury claims page

You need to provide these details to the injured person:

  • Your registration number and vehicle make
  • The state or territory where your vehicle is registered
  • Vehicle make
  • Your full name and phone number
  • The vehicle owner's full name

You don't need to call the police for every incident, however you should call them if:

  • You feel unsafe
  • The accident is causing a traffic hazard
  • You believe alcohol or drugs may be involved

Most importantly, call an ambulance first on 000 if you or anyone else is injured.

Anyone injured in a motor vehicle accident can make a claim, including:

  • The driver and passengers in another vehicle
  • Motorcyclists
  • Cyclists, pedestrians and other road users
  • The driver that caused the accident.

If an NRMA CTP insured vehicle caused the accident, the person injured will need to make a claim themselves. If they need assistance, someone else can help by filling in the appropriate forms to start their claim. When the claim is submitted, we'll need to speak to the injured person directly.

Drivers who caused an accident while driving an NRMA CTP insured vehicle may also be able to claim a lump sum for certain serious injuries.

You cannot make a claim if you:

  • Have been charged with or convicted of a serious driving offence in connection with the accident, or
  • Were the at-fault driver of an uninsured vehicle and you knew the vehicle was uninsured.

For more information, or to start a claim, visit our CTP claims page.

You can claim for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Funeral costs
  • Loss of financial support from the relative who died
  • Loss of services, such as the care of a parent for a child
  • Loss of earnings from your relative, from their injury until their death

You may still be able to claim even if the relative who passed away was partly at fault in the accident.
